Gateway residents on Radio 4

Published: 28 June 2008

Gateway residents of Lawrence Close had their say on local post office closures for a programme called 'the Last Post'.

Diana Bell, Iris Butler and and Jim Paton, all residents at our sheltered scheme in Lawrence Close, E3, met with the interviewer and producer of the Radio 4 programme.

Their local post office, in Heylyn Square, E3, is due to be closed. Radio 4 are investigating the recent spate of small post office closures across the UK.

Mrs Butler said 'my husband comes here every week to collect our pensions and pay our rent. We don't want it to close'.

Mr Paton said 'I'll have to walk much further to go to the post office now'.

Mrs Bell said 'the post office is vital to the elderly in the area. It's a community focus and what will happen when it's gone?'

The programme 'the Last Post' will be broadcast every Thursday morning from 17 July (5 programmes in total).
