Moving in
Published: 27 March 2008

Your Tenancy Agreement is an important legal document.
It should be kept it in a safe place. It sets out the rights and responsibilities of Gateway as a landlord and you as tenants.
If you are a new tenant moving into a Gateway home please remember to:
- check your gas and electricity supplies have been connected
- read the gas and electricity meters. This is to let the utility companies know you are the new tenant. This means you won't be charged for utilities used by the previous tenant. Tell them your name and address and the exact meter readings.
- check that you have running water in your new home. If the water has been switched off, find the stopcock and turn it on. Let the local water company know that you have moved in.
- tell Tower Hamlets Council Tax that you are the new tenant.
- make a list of all the people and organisations who should be informed that you have moved to a new address.
If you are receiving benefits, make sure that it is the right amount - contact us if you need help with this. Or visit the Council's benefits webpage.
